A striking pink and purple wildflower dominates the foreground, with its detailed center and dramatic petals glowing against deep blue shadows. Behind stretches a dreamlike desert scene with neon red rocks and blue vegetation under a purple-hued sky. A distant mesa or rock formation appears in the background, bathed in warm sunset colors. The entire composition uses unnaturally bright colors that showcase Alex's signature style blending Southwestern landscape elements with electric, neon coloration.

A Glimpse into My Heritage as a New Mexican Woman: A Three-Generation Gift from the Desert

Carrying New Mexico's Light Through New York's Streets

The first time I mixed neon pink with the earthy red of New Mexico clay, something clicked into place. I was seven, sitting cross-legged sitting ontop of a mountain looking at New Mexico desert, I watched how my mother brought the landscape to life through her brushstrokes. She taught me that color isn't just what we see—it's what we feel, what we remember, what connects us to place and to each other.

Growing up under those endless New Mexico skies shaped how I see the world. There's a particular quality to desert light—how it shifts and transforms, revealing colors that seem to vibrate beneath the surface. When I moved to New York, I carried that light with me, finding ways to blend it with the electric pulse of the city.

My paintings became bridges between worlds—the quiet vastness of home and the vibrant density of my new community.

The culturally inspired fine art I create now lives in this beautiful in-between space. My brushstrokes still follow the patterns my mother taught me, but the stories they tell have expanded. When we gather for paint and sip events, I'm sharing more than technique—I'm inviting you into this conversation between landscapes, between memories and possibilities.

A vintage photograph of Alex Chavez as an infant being carried by her mother on a hike through the New Mexican desert. Her mother stands in warm golden light, wearing a patterned jacket and backpack, confidently holding baby Alex against her chest while gazing at the camera with quiet determination. The background showcases iconic Southwestern red rock formations and golden autumn desert vegetation. This meaningful image captures Alex's earliest connection to the New Mexican landscape that would later define her artistic voice, showing how her mother introduced her to the natural beauty of the Southwest from infancy, creating foundations for the artist Alex would become.
A sun-drenched photograph showing Alex Chavez as a child with her mother, sitting at the edge of a stunning canyon in New Mexico. They're perched on red rock overlooking vast desert landscapes with layered mesas stretching to the horizon. The young girl wears vibrant tie-dye clothes while her mother, wearing a turquoise shirt and carrying a pink backpack, sits beside her with an open watercolor set and paper between them. This moment captures the outdoor painting experiences that would later influence Alex's artistic style, with the dramatic Southwestern landscape serving as both subject and classroom for her developing artistic vision.
A warm, intimate photograph showing young Alex Chavez painting with her mother in a traditional New Mexican adobe home. Both are wearing denim overalls splattered with colorful paint and sitting on a woven rug surrounded by art supplies. Sunlight streams through the window, illuminating their smiling faces as they work together on a bright yellow and orange painting. The adobe interior features traditional Southwestern textiles hanging on earth-toned walls and terracotta pottery on built-in shelves, capturing the cultural environment that influenced Alex's artistic development and her connection to New Mexico's artistic heritage.

Brushstrokes & Stories: My Personal Online Journal

When I sit down to write, it feels a lot like those quiet moments before I begin to paint—a pause filled with possibility, where memories surface and colors start to form. This journal isn't just about techniques or finished pieces; it's a living space where we can connect beyond the canvas, where the stories behind the neon oils become as vibrant as the paintings themselves.

Here, you'll find glimpses into the moments that spark creation—the way morning light filters through my studio window reminding me of New Mexico dawns, or how a conversation with a stranger on the subway suddenly unlocks a color palette I've been searching for. I share the layers beneath each painting, because art isn't just about what you see—it's about what you feel, what you remember, what connects us across distances.

Some days I'll take you behind the scenes of my creative process, showing how traditions passed through generations shape my modern techniques. Other days, we'll explore the culture that feeds my work—the desert wisdom my grandmother wove into stories, the urban rhythms that pulse through New York's streets, the beautiful collision of worlds that happens when we gather to create together.

This space belongs to all of us—a collective journal where individual brushstrokes build something larger than ourselves. Whether you're curious about the secrets behind vibrant neon landscapes or searching for the courage to begin your own artistic journey, these stories are doorways into a community where everyone's perspective adds depth to the whole.
